Shaila Tenorio awarded Artist in Residence at Confluence Gallery!

Confluence Gallery and Art Center welcomes

Shaila Yovan Tenorio
Confluence Gallery Artist in Residence

As Artist in Residence, Shaila will receive three months of studio space on the second floor of Confluence Gallery. Shaila's residency will culminate in a solo exhibit at Confluence March 4 - April 15 2017 with an opening reception March 4th 4-8pm.

Shaila is a self-taught painter working primarily on canvas in oils. Her favorite muses are the horse friends she has lived with and grown up with since childhood.

Shaila's intention for her residency focuses on her relationship with horses, in particular a wild Mustang she owns. Shaila;s horse is a BLM Mustang who was “wild trapped” in Oregon in 2011. He has been with her for three years and is her greatest challenge and her greatest love. The mind of a wild animal is at another level than that of one born “domestic” and though the horse is considered a tool and a partner by many a wild horse is not of this opinion.

In the body of work Shaila will create during her residency, she will portray visually how hard, yet, how beautiful it is to attempt to embrace someone else’s point of view, whether within culture, generation, spirituality, personality, and to maintain respect, trust, and dignity toward each other. The similarities between human and horse are also something she would like to explore through this project, as well as, incorporating her writing.

Tenorio was born in Washington, grew up in the Okanogan Highlands and currently lives in Carlton, WA in the beautiful Methow Valley. The natural world and her experience with animals and the wild places have inspired her to create art that speaks to social, environmental and animal causes. Shaila has been exhibiting her art since 2010 primarily in Washington and California.
