Mary Lou McCollum is a Methow Valley artist known for her growing painting series of stairs, chairs and landscapes. Mary Lou creates these works in her studio, much of it from her memory of places she has visited or from reference sketches and photos. She loves the process of painting, finding where a painting is leading and discovering what needs to be done to bring it to completion.

Mary Lou studied art at North Seattle Community College where she worked primarily in watercolor, painting many different subjects including landscapes, the figure and still life. She also studied with Charles Emerson and Barbara Fugate at Gage Academy (Seattle Academy of Fine Art) where she was introduced to the work of 20th century artists as well as the great masters. This new awareness of art history began to change her work. At that time she started working in oil, which she found to be a very stimulating and freeing medium. Mary Lou learned to take more chances and to push into new territory.

Printmaking is a newer and challenging interest for Mary Lou. She loves the intricacies and hands-on work of making a linoleum cut and finding out how it looks in printed form.

Mary Lou feels she is very fortunate to have the opportunity and freedom to paint and to share her paintings with others. We are fortunate she chooses to share them with us!
