Join Seattle artist, art educator, tour leader, and art critic Gary Faigin for a lively hour exploring 10 not-to-be-missed art experiences in Europe, culled from his many years of leading art tours to capitols like Rome, Paris, Madrid, and Berlin. Faigin will share both the images and the stories of one-of-a-kind masterworks like Bosch’s terminally bizarre Garden of Earthly Delights, or Frans Hals colossal, livelier-than-life portraits of partying militia men in Golden Age Holland. While some of the pieces will be familiar, others are almost unknown and rarely visited, like the by-appointment-only Vasari Corridor in Florence. More than simply a “best-of” list, this talk is a quick tour through some of the most compelling artist personalities and stories of Western Art…
a rewarding evening even for the armchair traveler.

Gary Faigin is the Artistic Director and co-founder of the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, now celebrating its 25th Anniversary. He has led art tours to Europe for the past 20 years, including most of the important art centers from Budapest to Barcelona. He was the monthly art critic on Seattle’s NPR station, KUOW for ten years, and currently writes art reviews for the Seattle Times. His own paintings explore his two favorite themes: altering one’s perception of the commonplace, and developing mood through intense contrasts of light and dark. Faigin’s art has been featured in 14 solo shows, including two museum shows: Frye Art Museum (2001 w/catalog) and Coos Art Museum (2008). Faigin has also participated in over 20 group shows in Santa Fe, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, New York. His book, The Artists’ Complete Guide to Facial Expression, is currently in its 22nd printing, and has been translated into 7 languages.
