Storytelling - Through the Lens


Every picture tells a story, and everyone has a story to tell. On August 24 & 25, educator and visual storyteller, Lyn McCracken, teaches how to produce a short documentary with still or moving images. It’s a great class for organizations, businesses and individuals with a message to share. Any camera will do, digital, analog and even Polaroid. No experience is necessary, and it’s open to all ages.

Lyn makes connections as she teaches, between the history of photography, technology and science, light and chemistry, and how people see or perceive the world. She is interested in the role of images as catalysts or indicators of social change.

Her personal photographic work is mostly documentary. This workshop is part of her visit to open an exhibit of her current project: Mujeres de la Guerra: Historias de El Salvador (Women of the War: Stories from El Salvador) that is on view at Confluence Gallery from August 23, through Sept 16

Lyn has won awards, grants and commissions for her work and is an active member of the National Society for Photographic Education. She holds a B.F.A. degree from Cornish College of the Arts and M.F.A. from Mills College. Lyn has extensive experience as a visiting lecturer and has taught photography in colleges, high schools, and community centers since the early 1990's. She currently teaches at The Northwest School in Seattle.

Airbrush Techniques with Becky Myers

Explore a world of possibilities with airbrush painting. Take the single introductory class for $65, or for a deeper understanding, take all four classes at $225. Besides creating finished artworks on a variety of surfaces, airbrush is used for faux painting, pin striping, touching up old photos, backgrounds even fingernail painting!

Airbrush for Art or Craft


Becky Myers, outstanding artist, crafter and teacher, introduces the world of possibilities through airbrush painting. Airbrush can be a tool for pure creativity or supply important skills for adding quality and depth to home, craft or art projects. The first class, on September 8, introduces the tools and paints and provides practice time. In the subsequent series, September 15, and October 6 and 20, students explore special techniques and end up creating finished works fit for framing.

Myers provides a lifetime of knowledge both in the classroom and in the form of take home handouts and resources about tools and materials. Airbrush painting can be used to create pinstriping, backgrounds, touch up old photos do faux painting and even creatively paint fingernails.

Becky Meyers is an accomplished wildlife artist who lives in the tiny town of Carlton in the veritable artist’s colony called the Methow Valley. She makes her living from art and loves entering competitions. Becky began painting wildlife in 1987 and taught herself to render animals realistically on unusual surfaces; stone, canvas, marble, eggs, with a variety of media; paint, airbrush, drawing, scratchboard and wood burning. She is a master of the tools and techniques of art making and continuously looks for new ways of being creative. Mujeres de la Guerra: Historias de El Salvador (Women of the War: Stories from El Salvador)

An exhibit of large format formal portraits of women who fought in the El Salvador Civil War (1980-1992) with accompanying text and archival images.

Lyn McCracken tells the story of a country at war through the very personal stories and dignified portraits of the women who chose to fight.

Opening - Thursday, Aug 23, 7pm  

Lyn McCracken is a photographer, visual storyteller and lifelong educator in the arts. She opens her exhibit at Confluence Gallery with a presentation about her current project, including a discussion about large format portraiture.
